Green Washing in San Diego and the World

Companies or products that aggrandize their environmental practices or a product’s attributes are common place in this new eco-driven era. So, how do you look for green washing? The entire product must be considered to be truly green and not just greenwashed. Consider the following: Where is it made and therefore how far must it be shipped? Does it use one or all renewable components and where are they from? How…

Interior and Exterior Design of Santa Barbara Court House

On a weekend trip to Solvang, CA, I, along for the ride while my husband road a century, enjoyed the quick stop in beautiful Santa Barbara. Built in 1929, the quintessential architecture Santa Barbara is known for, echos throughout the Santa Barbara Court House. This interior shot of the ceiling in the Mural room, shows the paint technique referred to as "Dutch-Metal", which means the artist mixed zinc and copper to…

how do u feel about designer purchasing

Below is great caption that I found, which eloquently explains the value designers bring to the purchasing process.  In an article, by Gail Dolby on Decorati, geared toward designers, on adapting to the ever-changing and internet savvy consumer, she also takes time to address consumer concerns. ... Consumers: Ask your designers how they handle purchasing and mark-ups. Designers work very hard to create a fabulous result for you, and if they…

tract home bathroom make over

In this tract home, located in Carlsbad, CA (San Diego area) a bland, washed out bath was converted to an intriguing blend of warm finishes. On a tight $25,000 budget,  the home owners wanted design consultation on how to spruce up their master bath.  Like many tract homes they had the typical ugly oak cabinets with white tile countertops. For a quick face lift we replaced the face-frame cabinets with a…

Ocean Front Remodel in Solana Beach – Before & After

At this beachfront home, sandy neutrals get a kick from bright coral and blues without competing with the ocean view. This seaside escape for homeowners Peter, retired Clinical Psychiatrist & Neurologist and Monique, practicing artist, was created as their retirement retreat. The overhaul included enlarging the kitchen by 90% to accommodate all the latest Subzero and Wolf appliances for Peter's aspiring gourmet cooking needs.  A serene beachy feel was the aspiration and inspired the tan and blue pallet. Pictured above, Peter and I are discussing the surround sound system installed and how he listens to classical as well as live radio from Germany and Switzerland, our respective homelands MASTER BEDROOM Here we removed the boxy fireplace and replaced it with…

Contemporary Before & After Remodel – Phase 2

In my last post I told you about a 2 phase remodel I worked on, showing before & after pictures of the fireplace, kitchen and flooring. I got some great feed back and comments and am excited to show you what we did in phase 2 for this small, contemporary, ocean-front condo. The focus of phase 2 was to design the sleeping quarters and baths to visually blend with the work we had already done. The challenge was to make a tiny master bathroom and bedroom feel bigger without adding square footage. BEFORE & AFTER PHASE 2 Guest Bath The original guest bath was the run-of-the-mill builder special cabinets and tile. Staying with our sleek, clean, white contemporary look we…

Contemporary Before & After Remodel – Phase 1

Summer is coming to an end and it's time for kids to go back to school. September is a great time for new beginnings. With that in mind, I want to share one of my smaller remodel projects with you. In this contemporary before and after, we remodeled this small 1100sf ocean front condo in 2 phases. In the first phase we refreshed the kitchen, tiled the floor and replaced the fireplace. REMODEL PHASE I THE KITCHEN In an effort to keep costs in check we decided to paint the existing cabinets. Existing white appliances dictated our selection of gloss white which gave us a built-in look without the cost.  While I don't normally recommend keeping older cabinetry because of…

Stunning Hudson Furniture Chandelier

Kelvin, Lumens, Watts it all mean?

Getting the right lighting for your space can be confusing. This stunning Hudson Furniture chandelier above, while certainly an accent in any room, is an example of an ambient lighting fixture. There are 3 basic types of lighting that haven't really changed in the last 10 years. Task - for reading or food prep. Ambient - general room lighting. Accent - highlighting art or washing a textured wall to draw attention to an area. HOWEVER, the language of lighting has changed. Watts is what consumers knew and came to understand. Since the change of lighting with efficacy regulations we now have terms that we aren't familiar with - Kelvin and Lumens, Watts it all mean? WATTs still tell us how much…

Happy New Year 2016

My Wish for 2016

Happy 2016! The thought of a new beginning is always present at the start of a new year – maybe we’ll lose those extra pounds, set some new life goals, or plan a dream vacation. I can't believe we are already here - 2016. Last year just flew by - did it for you too? Scott and I started a ritual a few years back of going to a cabin somewhere in the woods for new years and planning for the year to come.  We write out our goals and use various means throughout the year to help us make them come to fruition. For those that know me, you know that I have been blessed to go on some pretty amazing…

So Grateful and Excited to Share This with You

Can you believe we are just 2 weeks away from Thanksgiving?! Where does time go? In my travels, I have visited places where people aren't as fortunate as we are, which is always a reminder to stop worrying about the trivial things I sometimes get so caught up in. While I am always grateful for all that I have, November is a month that reminds me to vocalize my gratitude.  I have wonderful clients that I enjoy working with and I want to thank you all for being a part of my life and trusting me with creating your spaces. This year, I am especially grateful to my sister, Stephanie, the talented Director, Producer and Writer of the top rated…

Is This a Housing Bubble: Should You Invest in Interior Design?

Bringing the Indoors Out: Outdoor Furniture – 6 week summer series

In this final post of interior design and decorating for outdoors, I will cover outdoor furniture and fabric. This is another don't skimp zone. Get high quality furniture like Janus et Cie, Century, Gloster, Modern Outdoor, Brown Jordan and other designer brands available through design professionals. The photos in this post are all of projects I have completed for my clients in San Diego using high-end, quality furnishings. I always tell my clients not to skimp because it's not worth it but, I regretfully tested my theory last summer. I was in a pinch, as we had just rented out our house for the summer, and needed an outdoor table and chairs. The high end line I wanted was weeks…
